Mid March Steelhead Report
The last thirty days have been extremely mixed. We've been on local Mt Hood streams, Oregon's north coast, the Olympic Peninsula ..pretty much a heavy dose of lane changing. Along the way we've fished some new water, found some new opportunities and most importantly checked off a couple rivers where we've caught steelhead.
My new favorite place to go is the Quinault. The Quinault has a robust broodstock program that manages fish for quality not quantity. Fish like the one shown above are seen on a daily basis but you must have a Tribal Guide. I am going back with my wife at the end of the month to spend another day with Rich Underwood (360) 590-6444. Rich has been guiding on the Quinault since the 1980's and is a member of the Quinault Tribal Council. Although new to Spey Rods, Rich is a quick learner and has been spending time with some pretty good two handed anglers;-)
Sandy and Clackamas Rivers
If guided trips aren't your thing the upper Sandy and Clackamas rivers are fishing well and there is plenty of good access for walk ins. We are still booking trips for winter fish on both the Sandy and the Clack and summer fish are already showing up and mixing it up with the winters. We will be operating on these streams as long as the flows allow, probably late May or early June.
Deschutes River Steelhead
It probably sounds early to most people but our Deschutes River jet boat schedule is available and filling quickly. The best trips are the sled camps, we have openings in August but October and September are all but gone. All but two slots were held by prior attendees so we added an additional camp in August from the 12th through the 19th. If you haven't done this you should!
Tomorrow is the first day of spring! Time for trout fishing...NO CHANCE! Just saw the forecast for summer steelhead and it looks good.
Drop us a line if you want to fish with us!
